Sleep mode on an air conditioner – how to make the most of it

Every modern air conditioner has a sleep mode.

But how does it work, and why should you take advantage of this energy-saving option?

In this blog, the home air conditioning experts at Acer Services explain the ins and outs of your air conditioner’s sleep mode.

The benefits of using sleep mode

Running an air conditioner at “full pelt” all day or all night – either in cooling mode or heating mode – can improve your comfort, however it can be a very costly exercise.

The solution could be as simple as using the sleep mode function.

Located on the remote control unit on top brand units such as Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Samsung, sleep mode works on the assumption that as long as you are cool or cosy getting to sleep, you don’t need the same degree of cooling or warming once you are actually asleep.

As opposed to turning your air conditioner completely off (and waking up later in a pool of sweat, or shivering uncontrollably), sleep mode can turn the unit up or down to compensate for your needs while you are fast asleep.

For example, because your body is inactive whilst sleeping, you don’t need your air conditioner to be super cold all throughout the night.

In sleep mode, popular air conditioners like Panasonic will automatically increase the temperature setting by a ratio of between 0.5 and 1 degree per hour, up to a maximum of +3 degrees.

This will save energy and therefore save you money…and you won’t even feel the difference.

It’s the same principal when the air conditioner is in heating mode, only vice versa. In sleep mode, the temperature will be reduced by a ratio of 0.5 to 1 degree every hour up to a maximum of 2 to 3 hours.

Alternative to sleep mode

Sleep mode isn’t the only way to use your air con effectively. Naturally, it all comes down to personal preference.

You can pre-program your air con to turn on and off at certain times to reduce your energy consumption.

For instance, in winter you may only want to use your reverse cycle air conditioner to heat your bedroom sufficiently until such time as your doona has made you as warm as toast.

You can then program the unit to fire up again just before you leap out of bed ready to face the new day.

It’s really up to you how you want to use your air conditioner. Sleep mode is a great “set and forget” function that most people aren’t aware of. We encourage you to give it a try and see how you like it! You may see noticeable results in your next power bill.
